This training manual is divided into three sections:
Section 1 Looks at the incidence and prevalence of psychological distress in general practice and reviews the epidemiology of such disorders. This section also focuses on methods for improving interview skills and case-identification and includes using the sphere instrument.
Section 2 Addresses issues such as making a specific diagnosis and identifying risk factors to suicide, concurrent medical illness and slowed recovery.
It also looks at some of the general principles of management, including engaging a patient in a treatment plan, and pharmacological and non-pharmacological management of depression and anxiety.
Section 3 Addresses issues surrounding follow-up and long-term care and evaluation of the patient, including strategies for preventing relapse.
